Satellite Infrared Spectrometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010738

An early satellite-borne instrument designed to measure infrared radiation emitted by the Earth's surface and atmosphere at different wavelengths. Data from the Satellite Infrared Spectrometer (SIRS) provided the first vertical profiles of atmospheric temperature and water vapor on a global scale. The SIRS instruments flew on the Nimbus 3 and Nimbus 4 satellites in 1969 and 1970.
