Temperature-Humidity Infrared Radiometer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010806
A satellite-borne instrument designed to measure infrared radiation from the Earth's surface and atmosphere at specific wavelengths to determine temperature and water vapor content. The Temperature-Humidity Infrared Radiometer (THIR) typically used a channel near 11 micrometers for surface and cloud-top temperatures and a channel around 6.7 micrometers, a strong water vapor absorption band, for humidity in the middle and upper troposphere. This instrument was part of the payload on several Nimbus weather satellites.
