Surface Composition Mapping Radiometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010798

An instrument flown on the Nimbus 5 satellite designed to measure thermal emission from Earth's surface in three spectral bands. The Surface Composition Mapping Radiometer, or SCMR, collected data on surface and cloud-top temperatures, and differences in emissivity to infer information about geological composition and soil moisture. Its measurements were made in the atmospheric windows at 8.3 to 9.3 micrometers and 10.2 to 11.2 micrometers, plus a water vapor channel.
