TIROS-N'' Operational Vertical Sounder

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009687

A three-instrument package, abbreviated TOVS, flown on the TIROS-N and subsequent NOAA series of polar-orbiting satellites to measure vertical profiles of atmospheric temperature and moisture. The system combined data from the High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS/2), the Stratospheric Sounding Unit (SSU), and the Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU). This multi-instrument approach allowed for soundings to be made even in the presence of clouds by using the microwave channels.
