Advanced microwave sounding unit

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003314

A multi-channel microwave radiometer flown on polar-orbiting satellites to measure atmospheric temperature and water vapor profiles from the surface to the upper stratosphere. The instrument, designated AMSU, detects microwave radiation emitted by the Earth's atmosphere at specific frequencies, which can penetrate clouds. Data from its channels are processed to create vertical soundings of temperature and humidity, which are assimilated into numerical weather prediction models.
