Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003316

A broad-band, five-channel radiometer carried on NOAA's polar-orbiting satellites, used for global monitoring of cloud cover, sea surface temperature, and vegetation. It measures reflected solar radiation and emitted thermal radiation in visible, near-infrared, and infrared wavelengths. AVHRR data have been continuously collected since 1978, providing a long-term climate record.
