Special Sensor Microwave Temperature
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009088
A satellite-borne passive microwave radiometer designed to measure atmospheric temperature profiles from the surface to an altitude of about 30 kilometers. The instrument, part of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP), operates at seven specific frequencies within the 50 to 60 GHz oxygen absorption band. Data from the Special Sensor Microwave Temperature (SSM/T) are assimilated into numerical weather prediction models, providing temperature soundings over remote and oceanic areas where conventional data are sparse.
