Special Sensor Microwave Imager
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009087
A passive microwave radiometer flown on Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites, designed to measure microwave radiation emitted from the Earth's surface and atmosphere. It provides data on sea surface temperature, wind speed, atmospheric water vapor, cloud liquid water, and ice concentration. The SSM/I operates at several frequencies, including 19.35, 22.235, 37.0, and 85.5 GHz.
