Sea-Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008730

An ocean color instrument flown on satellites, designed to measure the color of the ocean by detecting visible and near-infrared light reflected from the sea surface. This sensor provides data on chlorophyll-a concentrations, which are indicators of phytoplankton biomass and ocean productivity. SeaWiFS data are used to monitor marine ecosystems and the global carbon cycle.
