Stratospheric and Mesospheric Sounder

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009299

A passive microwave radiometer flown on the Nimbus 6 satellite, designed to measure temperature and constituent concentrations in the stratosphere and mesosphere. It operated by detecting thermal emission from atmospheric gases at specific microwave frequencies. This instrument provided global data on atmospheric structure and composition from 1975 to 1978, contributing to early studies of ozone and other trace gases in the upper atmosphere.
