Stratospheric Aerosol Measurement

A satellite-based experiment designed to measure the concentration and distribution of aerosols in the stratosphere. It uses the solar occultation technique, observing the sun through the Earth's limb to determine atmospheric extinction. The SAM II instrument, for instance, operated on the Nimbus-7 satellite from 1978 to 1993.
