Compression wave

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004561

A type of wave in which the oscillations of the medium's particles are parallel to the direction of wave propagation, resulting in alternating regions of compression and rarefaction. In the atmosphere, sound waves are a common example of compression waves, where air molecules are alternately pushed together and pulled apart. These waves transmit energy through the air without net displacement of the medium.
