Pressure vertical coordinates
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008136
A system in which pressure replaces geometric height as the vertical coordinate, so that analyses and models work on surfaces of constant pressure. In it the pressure gradient force becomes the gradient of geopotential height along each surface, and the continuity equation takes a form with no density term. Common standard levels are 850, 700 and 500 hPa.
