Pressure coordinates

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008129

A vertical coordinate system used in meteorology where pressure replaces geometric height as the independent vertical variable. In this system, surfaces of constant pressure are used to analyze atmospheric data, which simplifies certain atmospheric equations, such as the hydrostatic equation. This system is commonly employed in numerical weather prediction models and for plotting atmospheric soundings.
