Θ coordinate system
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009569
A vertical coordinate system used in atmospheric modeling and analysis where surfaces of constant potential temperature (theta, Θ) serve as the vertical coordinate levels. Air parcels undergoing adiabatic processes tend to move along these isentropic surfaces, which simplifies the depiction and interpretation of atmospheric flow patterns, particularly in the free atmosphere away from the surface. This system is contrasted with isobaric (constant pressure) or Cartesian (constant height) coordinate systems.
