Isentropic vertical coordinate
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010564
A vertical coordinate system where surfaces of constant potential temperature (isentropes) are used as the vertical levels instead of pressure or height. In adiabatic, frictionless flow, air parcels move along these isentropic surfaces, simplifying the analysis of atmospheric transport. This coordinate system is distinct from isobaric (constant pressure) or Cartesian (constant height) systems.
