Isentropic surface

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001442

  1. A surface within the atmosphere where the potential temperature is constant. Air parcels tend to move along these surfaces in the absence of diabatic heating or cooling, making them useful for visualizing and analyzing atmospheric flow. The slope of an isentropic surface indicates atmospheric stability, with steeply sloped surfaces suggesting greater instability.

  2. A two-dimensional surface containing points of equal potential temperature.
