Cylindrical coordinates

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004839

A three-dimensional coordinate system that extends polar coordinates into three dimensions by adding a height coordinate. It uses a radial distance from a central axis, an angle around that axis, and a vertical distance along the axis. In meteorology, these coordinates are sometimes used to describe atmospheric phenomena with cylindrical symmetry, such as certain types of vortices or atmospheric boundary layers.
