Natural coordinates
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007477
A curvilinear coordinate system where one axis is aligned with the instantaneous velocity vector of a fluid parcel, and the other axes are perpendicular to it. This system simplifies the equations of motion by separating acceleration into components parallel and perpendicular to the flow. It is particularly effective for analyzing atmospheric flow patterns such as jet streams and fronts.
