Generalized coordinates
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005897
A set of independent parameters used to specify the configuration of a dynamic system, not necessarily corresponding to Cartesian coordinates. These coordinates are chosen to simplify the mathematical description of the system's motion, especially when constraints are present. In atmospheric dynamics, examples include using potential temperature or pressure as a vertical coordinate instead of geometric height.
