Curvilinear coordinates

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004818

A coordinate system in which the coordinate lines are curves rather than straight lines, allowing for a more natural representation of certain physical phenomena. In atmospheric modeling, these systems are often employed to conform to irregular boundaries, such as topography, or to better resolve features in specific regions. Examples include spherical coordinates and terrain-following coordinates.
