Eta vertical coordinate
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005472
A type of terrain-following vertical coordinate system used in numerical weather prediction models, designed to reduce errors associated with steep topography. It is defined as a normalized pressure coordinate that smoothly transitions from following terrain near the surface to being purely isobaric aloft. This coordinate system was notably implemented in the NCEP Eta Model, providing improved representation of atmospheric processes over complex terrain.
