Curve of growth

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004817

A graphical representation showing the relationship between the equivalent width of an absorption line in a stellar spectrum and the number of absorbing atoms in the stellar atmosphere. It illustrates how the strength of a spectral line increases with the abundance of the element causing it, eventually saturating. This tool is used to determine elemental abundances and physical conditions in stars.
