Depth-duration curve
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010470
A graphical plot showing the maximum rainfall depth that occurs for a given duration within a storm event, specific to a certain return period. The curve illustrates how, for a fixed probability of occurrence, shorter-duration rainfalls have lower total depths than longer-duration ones. These curves are derived from intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) data and are applied in hydrology and civil engineering for designing stormwater management systems.
