Duration curve

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000796

  1. A graphical representation that shows the percentage of time during which a given meteorological or hydrological variable equals or exceeds a particular value. For example, a streamflow duration curve illustrates the percentage of time that a certain discharge rate is met or surpassed. These curves are used in water resource management and climatological analysis.

  2. In hydrologic terms, a cumulative frequency curve that shows the percent of time during which specified units of items (e.g. discharge, head,
power, etc.) were equaled or exceeded in a given period. It is the integral of the frequency diagram.
