Flood frequency distribution
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005635
A statistical representation that relates the magnitude of flood events, such as peak discharge or stage, to their probability of being equaled or exceeded in any given year. This analysis uses historical streamflow data to construct a probability curve for a specific point on a river. The distribution is used to estimate the return period of floods, for example, identifying the discharge corresponding to a 100-year flood event.
