Return period

The average interval of time between occurrences of an event of a specified magnitude or greater. In meteorology, this is applied to extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, or severe storms, indicating how frequently such an event is expected to happen. A 100-year flood, for example, has a 1% chance of occurring in any given year.
