Return stroke

The highly luminous and energetic discharge of electricity that propagates rapidly upward from the ground to the cloud during a lightning flash. This is the most visible and damaging part of a cloud-to-ground lightning event, following the initial downward leader. It carries the bulk of the current and produces the bright flash and thunder.
