Cloud-to-ground flash

A discharge of lightning that originates within a thundercloud and terminates on the Earth's surface. This electrical event involves a stepped leader propagating downward, followed by a brighter return stroke moving upward from the ground. These flashes are responsible for most lightning-related damage and fatalities, and their occurrence rate varies geographically.
