Extreme wave height

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005524

The maximum wave height expected to occur within a specified period, having a very low probability of being exceeded. It is a statistical measure derived from long-term wave data or hindcast models, used for designing coastal and offshore structures to withstand severe sea states. This value is frequently expressed in terms of a return period, such as the 100-year wave height, which has a 1% chance of being exceeded in any given year.
