Rainfall intensity return period

The average interval, in years, between occurrences of a rainfall event with an intensity equal to or greater than a specified value. This statistical measure is used in hydrology and civil engineering to assess the risk of extreme rainfall events. A 100-year return period rainfall, for example, has a 1% chance of occurring in any given year.
