Rainfall frequency

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008379

A statistical measure of how often a rainfall event of a specific magnitude and duration is expected to occur at a particular location. It is expressed in terms of a return period, such as a 100-year storm, which is an event that has a 1% probability of being equaled or exceeded in any given year. These analyses are based on historical precipitation data and are used for designing infrastructure like storm drains and flood control systems.
