Design storm
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004948
A theoretical precipitation event, defined by its intensity, duration, and frequency, used as a standard for designing hydrologic and drainage systems. This statistical model represents a storm of a specific return period, such as a 10-year or 100-year event, that a structure is expected to withstand without failure. Engineers use design storm data to size culverts, storm sewers, and detention basins to manage runoff and prevent flooding.
