Spillway design flood
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009141
The maximum flood flow, expressed as a hydrograph, that a dam's spillway is designed to safely pass without compromising the structure's integrity. This design flood is derived from a specific, severe hypothetical storm event, often the Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP), which represents the greatest depth of rainfall physically possible over a particular drainage basin. The resulting flood is calculated using a rainfall-runoff model that translates the extreme precipitation into a peak discharge and volume for engineering purposes.
