Probable maximum flood

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008162

The hypothetical greatest flood that can be reasonably expected to occur at a particular point on a river, resulting from the most severe combination of meteorological and hydrological conditions. The calculation involves estimating the probable maximum precipitation (PMP) over the drainage basin and then using a rainfall-runoff model to simulate the resulting flow. This value is a theoretical upper limit used in the design of high-hazard structures like spillways for large dams.
