Extreme value distribution

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005523

A family of probability distributions used to model the maximum or minimum values from a large collection of random observations. In meteorology and climatology, it is applied to analyze and predict the probability of rare events like record-breaking rainfall, wind speeds, or temperatures over a given period. The Generalised Extreme Value (GEV) distribution is a common form that combines the Gumbel, Fréchet, and Weibull families into a single framework for such analysis.
