Extreme value analysis
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005522
A statistical methodology used to model and understand the probability of rare events, such as record-breaking temperatures, maximum wind speeds, or peak precipitation amounts. It focuses on the tails of probability distributions, rather than the central tendency, to estimate the likelihood of events beyond observed data. This analysis often employs distributions like the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) or Generalized Pareto Distribution (GPD).
