Kurtosis
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006823
A statistical measure describing the shape of a probability distribution, specifically the weight of its tails relative to its central peak. It quantifies how prone a dataset is to producing values that are far from the mean or median. A distribution with high kurtosis has heavy tails and a sharp peak, indicating a greater frequency of extreme outliers, whereas a low kurtosis distribution has light tails and a flatter top.
