Pearson distribution
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007830
A family of continuous probability distributions developed by Karl Pearson, characterized by their shape as defined by the first four statistical moments: mean, variance, skewness, and kurtosis. These distributions are used in meteorology to model skewed or heavy-tailed data sets, such as daily rainfall amounts or wind speed frequencies. The specific type of Pearson distribution, from Type I to Type VII, is selected based on the values of the moments calculated from the observed data.
