Mixed distribution

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007324

A probability distribution for a random variable that is derived from a collection of other probability distributions. It represents a population that is a mixture of several distinct subpopulations, where each subpopulation follows a different statistical distribution. Mixed distributions are used in meteorology to model variables like daily precipitation, which combines a discrete probability of zero rainfall with a continuous distribution for positive rainfall amounts.
