Mixed cloud
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007323
A cloud containing a mixture of supercooled liquid water droplets and ice crystals at temperatures below 0°C (32°F). This coexistence is thermodynamically unstable, leading to the rapid growth of ice crystals at the expense of the liquid droplets through the Bergeron-Findeisen process. Such clouds are common in the mid-latitudes and are efficient at producing precipitation.
