Cylindrical projection
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004840
A type of map projection created by conceptually wrapping a cylinder around a globe and projecting the surface features onto it. Lines of longitude appear as equally spaced vertical lines, while lines of latitude are horizontal lines that become more widely spaced away from the equator. This projection type, including the Mercator projection, is widely used for weather maps because it preserves direction, although it significantly distorts areas near the poles.
