Geopotential

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005927

The work required to raise a unit mass from sea level to a specific height in the Earth's gravitational field. It represents the potential energy per unit mass at a given point in the atmosphere. This value is expressed in units of geopotential meters (gpm) and is used in meteorology to define constant pressure surfaces, which are more dynamically meaningful than constant geometric height surfaces.
