Geopotential thickness

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005931

The vertical distance, expressed in geopotential meters, between two constant pressure surfaces in the atmosphere. It is proportional to the mean temperature of the air column between those surfaces. This value is a key indicator of the average temperature in a layer and is used in forecasting to identify warm and cold air advection and to estimate the strength of baroclinic zones.
