Equipotential surface
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005449
A surface on which a potential, such as the gravitational geopotential, has the same value everywhere, so that the associated force acts perpendicular to it. Level surfaces of geopotential are surfaces of constant geopotential height, and mean sea level is approximately one. Isobaric surfaces are generally not equipotential surfaces, because they slope relative to them.
