Geopotential surface
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005930
A surface in the atmosphere where the geopotential is constant. These surfaces are analogous to equipotential surfaces in other physical fields. In meteorology, they are often used as vertical coordinates, and atmospheric charts frequently depict conditions on constant pressure surfaces, which are approximately geopotential surfaces.
