Geopotential field
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005928
A scalar field representing the geopotential at every point in the atmosphere. It describes the distribution of potential energy per unit mass throughout a volume of air. Surfaces of constant geopotential are often used in meteorology to analyze atmospheric pressure systems and air parcel movement, as air tends to flow along these surfaces in the absence of other forces.
