Thickness chart
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009624
A meteorological chart that displays the thickness, or vertical distance, between two specific isobaric surfaces, such as 1000 hPa and 500 hPa. These charts are essentially maps of the mean temperature of the air column between the chosen pressure levels. They are widely used by forecasters to identify frontal zones, locate areas of warm and cold air advection, and predict precipitation types.
