Isobaric thickness chart

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006684

A map displaying the vertical distance, or thickness, between two specified isobaric surfaces, which is directly proportional to the mean virtual temperature of the atmospheric layer. Lines of equal thickness delineate patterns of warm air (thicker layers) and cold air (thinner layers), and their spacing indicates the strength of the thermal wind. The standard layer analyzed is the 1000 to 500 millibar (hPa) layer, with thickness values measured in geopotential meters.
