Longitudinal rolls

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007034

Organized, helical circulations in the atmospheric boundary layer, aligned approximately parallel to the mean wind direction. These rolls consist of alternating bands of rising and sinking air, which can be visualized by cloud streets or parallel streaks of dust. They form under conditions of moderate wind shear and sufficient thermal instability.
